Soft starter works:
The soft starter uses three opposite parallel thyristors as voltage regulators, which are connected between the power supply and the motor stator. This circuit is a three-phase full-control bridge rectifier circuit. The main circuit diagram is shown in Figure 1. When a soft starter is used to start the motor, the output voltage of the thyristor gradually increases, and the motor gradually accelerates until the thyristor is fully turned on. The motor works on the mechanical characteristics of the rated voltage to achieve smooth startup, reduce the starting current, and avoid starting overcurrent trips. When the motor reaches the rated number of revolutions, the start-up process ends. The soft starter automatically replaces the thyristor with a bypass contactor to provide the rated voltage for the normal operation of the motor to reduce the heat loss of the thyristor and extend the service life of the soft starter. , Improve its work efficiency, and make the grid avoid harmonic pollution. The soft starter also provides a soft stop function. The soft stop is opposite to the soft start process. Selection of soft starter:
(1) Selection: The common soft starters on the market are bypass type, no bypass type, energy saving type, etc. Choose different types of soft starters according to the nature of the load.
Bypass type: When the motor reaches the rated number of revolutions, the soft starter that has completed the task is replaced with a bypass contactor to reduce the heat loss of the thyristor and improve its working efficiency. You can also use a soft starter to start multiple motors.
Non-bypass type: The thyristor is in a full-on state, and the motor works in full voltage mode, ignoring the voltage harmonic components, and it is often used for short-term repeated motors.
Energy-saving type: When the load of the motor is light, the soft starter automatically reduces the voltage applied to the motor stator, reduces the motor current excitation component, and improves the motor power factor.
(2) Selection specifications: Select the starter according to the nominal power of the motor and the nature of the current load. Generally, the capacity of the soft starter is slightly larger than the working current of the motor. It should also consider whether the protection function is complete, such as phase loss protection, short circuit protection, overload protection , Reverse sequence protection, overvoltage protection, undervoltage protection, etc.

The main circuit voltage of ABB soft starter is 380V, 690V. Take PSS type as an example. The main circuit is marked with red, the main circuit is 230-500V, the corresponding model is -500 series; the main circuit is 400-690V, the corresponding model is- 690V series. The industrial voltage in our country is usually 380V, so the -500 series should be selected. The 690V soft start is much more expensive.

The motor is an inductive load and the current lags the voltage. Most electrical appliances are in this category. In order to improve the power factor, it must be compensated with a capacitive load, and capacitor or with a synchronous motor. Reducing the exciting current of the motor can also improve the power factor (HPS2 energy saving function, reducing the voltage at light load, reducing the exciting current and increasing COS∮).
